5 Signs You Might Be a Temperament Blend — and What That Means
Most people are not a single pure temperament. They are a blend — and understanding your blend is where self-knowledge gets truly useful. Here are five signs you are a blend type.
Why Pure Types Are Rare
The four temperament model is powerful precisely because it is simple — four types that account for the full range of human personality. But life is not perfectly simple, and neither are people. Most individuals sit clearly in one primary temperament but carry significant traits from a second. These blend types are not exceptions to the model — they are a natural and important part of it.
In fact, research and clinical observation suggest that pure temperament types — people who score overwhelmingly in one category with virtually no traits from others — are relatively rare. Most people are a blend of a primary and a secondary temperament, and the combination of the two is what makes them uniquely themselves.
Sign 1: You Relate to Two Temperament Descriptions Almost Equally
When you read about the four temperaments, most people have a strong "that is definitely me" reaction to one type. But if you find yourself genuinely split between two — equally identifying with the Sanguine's love of people and the Melancholic's emotional depth, for example — that is a strong signal that you are a blend.
A Sanguine-Melancholic blend is a fascinating type: charming and sociable on the surface, but with a rich inner emotional life that most people never get to see. They can perform extroversion and then need extended solitude to recover. They love connection but are easily hurt by it.
Sign 2: You Behave Very Differently Depending on the Context
Blend types often show different dominant traits in different settings. A Choleric-Phlegmatic blend might be decisive and assertive at work (Choleric dominant) but calm and accommodating at home (Phlegmatic dominant). To the people who only see one context, this can be genuinely confusing. To the person themselves, it can feel like they are two different people.
This is not inconsistency. It is the natural expression of a blend — different situations activating different parts of the temperament mix.
Sign 3: You Have the Strengths and Weaknesses of Two Types
Blend types carry the strengths of both their temperaments — and the challenges. A Sanguine-Choleric blend has extraordinary energy, social skill, and ambition — but can be impulsive, domineering, and poor at sitting with complexity. A Melancholic-Phlegmatic blend is deeply empathetic, thoughtful, and loyal — but can be withdrawn, overly cautious, and prone to carrying the weight of others without asking for help.
If you recognise yourself in both the strengths and the shadow of two temperament types, you are likely a blend.
Sign 4: You Are Often Misunderstood by People Who Only See One Side
Because blend types shift between expressions, they can be genuinely confusing to others. The Phlegmatic-Choleric who is peaceful at home but decisive at work gets called "aggressive" by family and "passive" by colleagues — neither of whom is seeing the full picture. The Sanguine-Melancholic who is the life of the party but deeply introspective gets called "fake" by people who only see the social performance.
If you have regularly been told that you are "different from what people expected," that is often the signature of a blend.
Sign 5: Standard Temperament Advice Only Partly Applies to You
If you read advice for Sanguines and find it helpful for some things but completely off-base for others, you are probably seeing the influence of your secondary temperament. Effective growth work for a blend type has to take both components into account — which is exactly why personalised coaching is far more effective than generic frameworks.
The Most Common Blend Types
- Sanguine-Choleric: The dynamic, expressive leader. High energy, high ambition, high impact — and high risk of burning out or burning bridges.
- Sanguine-Phlegmatic: The warm, easy-going connector. Sociable and peaceful, loved by almost everyone, but can lack drive and follow-through.
- Choleric-Melancholic: The perfectionist leader. Driven and precise, produces exceptional results, but can be intensely self-critical and hard on others.
- Melancholic-Phlegmatic: The gentle idealist. Deep, empathetic, loyal, but often struggles to advocate for themselves and can become emotionally overwhelmed.
