Therapy Process
Your first session, often called an intake session, is primarily focused on getting to know you and understanding your concerns. Your therapist will:
- Ask about what brings you to therapy and your goals
- Gather some background information about your life and current situation
- Discuss confidentiality and other practical matters
- Answer any questions you have about the therapy process
- Begin to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs
This initial session helps establish a foundation for your therapeutic relationship. It's also an opportunity for you to determine if you feel comfortable with the therapist and their approach.
The duration of therapy varies widely depending on your specific needs, goals, and the type of issues being addressed. Some general guidelines:
- Short-term therapy: For specific, focused issues, therapy might last 8-12 sessions.
- Medium-term therapy: More complex issues may require 3-6 months of weekly sessions.
- Long-term therapy: Deep-seated issues, trauma, or personality concerns might benefit from longer-term work extending from several months to years.
Your therapist will discuss their recommendations during your initial sessions and periodically review your progress together. The therapy timeline can be adjusted based on your evolving needs and progress toward your goals.
Most therapy at Hisparadise begins with weekly sessions, which provides consistent support and maintains momentum in your therapeutic work. However, session frequency can be tailored to your specific needs:
- Weekly sessions: Standard for most therapy work, especially in the beginning stages.
- Twice weekly sessions: May be recommended for crisis situations or intensive therapeutic work.
- Bi-weekly sessions: Sometimes appropriate after significant progress has been made.
- Monthly sessions: May be used for maintenance after primary goals have been achieved.
Your therapist will discuss the recommended frequency with you based on your unique situation and adjust as needed throughout your therapy journey.
Progress in therapy can sometimes be subtle, but there are several signs that therapy is working:
- You notice changes in how you think, feel, or behave in situations that used to be challenging
- You develop new skills for managing difficult emotions or situations
- You gain insights about yourself, your patterns, and your relationships
- Others in your life notice positive changes in you
- You begin to achieve the specific goals you set at the beginning of therapy
Your therapist will periodically check in with you about your progress and may use assessments to track changes over time. It's also important to communicate openly with your therapist if you feel therapy isn't meeting your needs so adjustments can be made.
