What's the difference between a therapist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist?

I'm trying to figure out who to see and I keep getting confused by the different titles. My doctor mentioned a referral but I'm not sure what kind of professional fits what I need.

I'm dealing with persistent anxiety and some low mood. I'm not in crisis. I want someone who can help me understand what's happening and work through it. I don't think I need medication — but I'm not sure how to know.

Can someone explain the actual differences between these professionals and who might be right for what I'm describing?

Great question, and the confusion is very understandable.

**Therapist / Counsellor**: Provides talk therapy — conversations to help you understand patterns, process emotions, and develop coping strategies. This is likely what you are looking for if you want to understand and work through what you are experiencing.

**Psychologist**: Usually has a doctorate and can perform psychological testing and assessments in addition to therapy. Often works with more complex presentations.

**Psychiatrist**: A medical doctor who specialises in mental health. The key difference: they can prescribe medication. If your situation might require medication, a psychiatrist is who you would see.

For persistent anxiety and low mood without a current need for medication, a therapist or counsellor is typically the right first step. If medication becomes a consideration, they can make a referral. Our team is made up of trained therapists — we would be happy to speak with you.
