Ask a Therapist

How do I know if I actually need therapy or if I can manage on my own?

I've been going back and forth on this for months. Things in my life are difficult — I'm not going to pretend they aren't — but I also have good days, I function, I have people around me. I keep thinking therapy is for people who are really struggling.

But at the same time, the weight of everything is starting to affect my sleep, my concentration, my relationships. I snap at people I love. I can't seem to enjoy things the way I used to.

Is there a way to know when managing on your own stops being enough?

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it deserves a direct answer.

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. The signs you are describing — disrupted sleep, difficulty concentrating, reduced enjoyment, impact on your relationships — are meaningful signals that your system is telling you something. Therapy is not a last resort. It is most effective precisely when you are still functional but something is off.

A useful question to ask yourself: is the way things are now how you want to keep living? If the answer is no, therapy is worth trying.

We would be glad to talk to you about whether we might be a good fit for what you are carrying.
