My university has a student affairs office. It has a counsellor listed on its website. The counsellor has been on leave since the beginning of the session. There is a suggestion box outside an office that is always locked.
Meanwhile: I have watched three of my coursemates go through what appeared to be depressive episodes with no institutional support. I have seen students in crisis directed to the chaplain. I have heard of a student who was struggling and was told by a lecturer to "focus on your books."
I am not in crisis. But I have my own things I carry, like most people do, and the gap between what I need and what is available on campus is wide.
I've started using platforms like this one. I've found a WhatsApp group of students sharing mental health resources. I've read enough to understand some of what I'm experiencing.
But it shouldn't be this hard. You shouldn't have to build your own support infrastructure from scratch while also writing exams and managing accommodation and navigating everything else that comes with being a student in Nigeria.
How are people managing? What resources have you found that actually work when the formal ones don't exist?
