I graduated nine months ago. I thought I would feel free. Instead I feel unmoored.
For four years there was a structure. Semesters, exams, goals, a cohort of people moving through the same thing. Now there is just: figure out your life. No timeline. No rubric. No clear measure of whether you are succeeding.
The expectations that accumulated around graduation — from family, from yourself — become a weight when the actual aftermath is less triumphant than the idea of it. Entry-level jobs that want five years of experience. Application silences that last months. The creeping sense that you prepared for a world that doesn't quite exist.
I have friends who seem to be doing fine and I can't tell if they genuinely are or if everyone is quietly confused and nobody wants to be the one to say it.
I'm not depressed. I think I'm just in a transition that nobody prepared me for and nobody seems to want to acknowledge is genuinely difficult.
For people who have come through this particular fog — what helped? How long did it last? And how did you find direction in a moment when everything felt like it could go any direction or no direction?
