Grief & Loss

Christmas without them — how do you survive grief during celebrations?

This was my first Christmas without my brother. He died in August — sudden cardiac arrest, no warning, no goodbye. He was 31.

I thought I had braced for it. I told myself that we would acknowledge it, light a candle, do something intentional. What I didn't prepare for was how loud his absence would be in every moment we had always shared.

The joke at the table that he would have made. The seat that everyone carefully didn't look at. My mother's face every time something reminded her. The way our family laughed a little less easily than we used to.

I made it through the day. But I want to prepare better for the next one, and for his birthday in March, and for all the other dates that will now be marked by absence rather than presence.

How do people who have lost someone navigate the calendar of grief — the birthdays, the holidays, the anniversaries? What rituals or approaches have helped you get through those days with some intention rather than just white-knuckling it?
